Meet the Team

Wendell B. Dunn has practiced law for over 30 years in Western Montana. While living and practicing in Whitefish for 25 years, Wendell focused his practice on business entity selection, contracts and property law.

He operated a general practice office in Whitefish helping individuals with questions about limited liability companies, corporations, partnerships, wills, divorces, guardianships, conservatorships and easements. Throughout those years Wendell has worked with non-profit entities to help them organize, plan and carry out their activities.

Growing up and working on the family’s turkey farm in Western Nebraska, Wendell spent most of his time outdoors with a varied menagerie of pets. As the farm developed its federally inspected turkey processing plant, Wendell performed about every task involved in the operations of the farm – from shovelling out the pens, constructing the buildings, working in the plant and accompanying his father during appointments with politicians and lawyers.

It was during discussions with his father about the farm’s water rights litigation that Wendell developed a keen interest in the law.

The sparse populace of the Sandhills in which Wendell grew up ardently encouraged hard work, honesty, integrity and achievement among its young people. Whether it was sports, scholastics, music, or county fair projects, the people of the area recognized and showed their appreciation of excellence in their youngsters. This created individuals with a strong drive to be the best at whatever they attempted. Wendell attributes his desire to constantly improve and learn to the lively competition which was cultivated during those years.

Living in such a rural area also caused folks to have a strong sense of community responsibility. When a neighbor met with troubles, someone or several individuals contributed their set of skills to help that neighbor through their difficulty. It was not viewed so much as an obligation but rather an honor to be able to assist people when the need arose. Wendell still believes in those core values.

Wendell went to college at the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts (English major) and a Juris Doctorate in 1978. While attending college Wendell worked as a bartender, a clerk for the Nebraska State Law Library, a legal aide in a law firm specializing in criminal defense, and as an Assistant District Probation Officer in the Panhandle.

After a trip from Nebraska through Montana to Alaska the summer before his last year of law college, Wendell had a plan. A stubborn, independent streak spurred him to leave the comfortable connections available in Lincoln to set up his own business. His love of mountains and skiing drew him first to Colorado but always with the plan to get back to Montana. Three years later he sold his partnership interests in Colorado and headed for Missoula.

Wendell acted as counsel for a large petroleum distribution company but within two years had to get back to running his own business. He moved to Whitefish, opened his solo law office there in January, 1984 then that summer met Andrea. Wendell’s plans to move on to Alaska were shelved when they fell in love with each other and Northwest Montana.

Together, they operated the law office and raised their daughter in Whitefish until 2009. Wendell and Andrea now reside and work in Polson, Montana. Still operating the law office together they continue to enjoy traveling throughout the area to meet with individuals in need of legal services.
